Dr. Alastair Kay BVSc, MS, DACVS, MRCVS


Dr Alastair Kay qualified from The University of Liverpool with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science (with merit) in 1998, then spent 18 months in large animal/equine practice, followed by 3 years in specialist equine practice, both assignments in the North of England. He then was named a surgery intern and associate at Rossdale’s Equine Referral Hospital in Newmarket, England, where he served for 18 months before coming to the United States.

He spent his first year in the US at Hagyard Equine Medical Institute as a surgery intern (Davidson Surgery Department), then a 3 year Equine Residency at Ohio State University, and finally a year as a clinical instructor at the University of Georgia.

Dr. Kay is Board-Certified and specializes in all diagnostic and surgical procedures related to the developing and adult performance horse and racehorse, including surgery of the upper airway and orthopedic and minimally invasive surgery. Other areas of specialization include in-depth lameness and poor performance investigation involving treadmill endoscopy, Ultrasonography, nuclear scintigraphy and CT scans. He also has extensive experience with yearling and in-training sales and pre-purchase examinations.

A special goal is to attract further equine poor performance investigations, work associated with the development and training of the thoroughbred and standardbred racehorse, and to offer a premium consultation service to owners, trainers and referring veterinarians.

Alastair’s hobbies are playing soccer, and following rugby and motor-sports (Formula 1 and the World Rally Championship).
